Darrin McBroom is entering his first season with Iowa Western. He comes to IWCC by way of Longview Community College in Lee’s Summit, MO. Longview is a DII program in the NJCAA, and it is where McBroom got his start coaching women’s collegiate volleyball.
After four seasons at Longview, McBroom established the program as one of the premiere programs in the nation. Since the 2005 season, the Lakers have compiled a record of 145-33 and produced four 30+ win seasons in a row. The four year record also marks an 81% win percentage for the program.
In his first season, Longview moved into the national rankings for the first time in program history, and has remained there ever since. Longview has continued to be named among the top 15 teams nationally in the NJCAA Coaches Poll moving as high as #4 in 2008.
Additionally, McBroom’s Lakers captured three successive Regional Championships. In 2006 and 2007, the Laker’s also secured District titles catapulting them into the National Tournament in Scottsdale, AZ. In the 2006 tournament, despite entering the tournament as the 13th seed, the Lakers pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament, defeating the 4th seed in the first round and going on to capture 6th place. In 2007, the Lakers placed 9th, upsetting the #7 seed in the consolation championship match.
McBroom is a three time recipient of the NJCAA Region XVI Coach of the Year honors and a two time District P Coach of the Year recipient. After the 2005 season, he was also honored as a midwest region coach of the year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. He was one of eight coaches nationally to receive the honor. In 2007, McBroom reached his first collegiate coaching milestone of 100 career victories in just three seasons.
His players have been the recipient of 19 All Region honors, and two have become NJCAA two time All Americans.
Prior to coaching at the collegiate level, McBroom spent nine years coaching high school where he posted a record of 143-64-9.
He is a CAP I certified coach, and is affiliated with Gold Medal Squared volleyball. He received his Bachelor and Masters degree from Northwest Missouri State University.
