Emmett Statzer comes to Iowa Western from the state of Nevada. He had resided there for 11 years coaching and teaching. His family consists of two children and his wife.
He spent much of his early life growing up in Manhattan, Montana where he attended Manhattan High School. It was here where he developed his initial passion for track and field. The days of training on cinder tracks were long, but yet so satisfying.
He proceded to continue his running career at Jamestown College, in Jamestown, North Dakota. He ran under legendary coach Rollie Greeno. Emmett focussed on the hurdles, mid distances, and relays for the Jimmies. He graduated College Fellow in both of his Bachelor of Arts degrees. He graduated with a BA in Elementry Education and K-12 Physical Education/Health degrees with a minor in coaching.
Emmett comes to Iowa Western with passion, energy, and most of all competiveness. The inaugural year for the sport at Iowa Western proved to be a very promising experience. In cross country the men's team was 10th and the women's team 19th in the nation. The men's team was lead by David Baramasai who finished as the Region XI runner of the year and Regional Champion. He also finished with All-American Honors in the 1/2 Marathon National Championships and the Cross Country National Standings. In the indoor track and field season the men's team had 8 region champions qualifying 9 for the National Indoor Championships. The women's team had 6 region champions and qualified 6 for the national meet. The outdoor track season proved to be the best performance of all. The men's team took the Region XI team title. There were 12 idnividual region champions and 14 men qualified for the national meet. The top award for the year went to David Barmasai who was the school's 1st National Champion in the 3000m. Steeplechase. Jacob Smith recieved Academic All-American status in Cross Country/Track & Field. The coaches association nominated 7 members of the team for academic awards. On the women's side there were 8 region champions and 6 qualified for the national meet. The top award went to Kara Kersten in the Heptathlon with a 15th place finish. Three ladies were nominated by the coaches association for academic honors. Emmett and his staff look forward to 2008-2009 seasons and expect more success to come.
