Jim Turgeon enters his third year as head women’s basketball coach for Iowa Western Community College. This past season Coach Turgeon led the Lady Reivers to a 18-13 record and the team made it to the NJCAA district quarter final game. His first season at Iowa Western, he led the team to a 21-10 record and to the NJCAA district quarter final game. With this 20-win season, Coach Turgeon has tallied 20 or more wins five out of the last seven years. Prior to coming to Iowa Western Community College Coach Turgeon coached at Dodge City Community College where spent seven years as the head coach. While at Dodge City Community College he left as the 2nd all-time leader in games won at the school. Before Coach Turgeon took over reigns at Dodge City the Women’s basketball program had suffered through a record of 28-63 the 3 previous seasons. Coach Turgeon led the Conquistadors to a record of 105-55 over the past 5 seasons with four consecutive seasons of 20 wins or more. His 2003-04 finished runner-up in the always tough NJCAA Region VI tournament with a 26-8 record which also landed him the KBCA Junior College Coach of the year. His 2004-05 team finished as runner-ups in the Jayhawk West Conference with a record of 26-6 which is a school record for winning percentage in a season.

Coach Turgeon’s first college coaching experience came as an assistant at Cedar Valley College in suburban Dallas, Texas. Working for long time head coach Rick McCormick they finished with a 23-7 record in his only season at the school which at the time was a school record for wins. Coach Turgeon got his start in coaching at basketball tradition rich Topeka Hayden High School. While coaching at all different levels of boy’s and girl’s basketball the school experienced 6 boys and 3 girls Kansas State Championships.

Coming from a basketball family coach Turgeon had 2 sisters and 1 brother play college basketball. His brother Mark played at Kansas University for Larry Brown and played in the 1986 NCAA Final 4. Mark is also in coaching and is the current head Men’s Basketball Coach at Texas A&M University in College Station. Coach Turgeon’s father played at Creighton University and also spent some time in the high school coaching ranks. Coach Turgeon attended Friends University in Wichita, Kansas on a basketball scholarship and later transferred to Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas to complete his degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sport Facility Management. Jim has been married to Tracey (Roth) Turgeon for 20 years and has two children Thomas (20) & Taylor (18).
