IWCC Hosts 10th Annual Basketball Special Olympics

Thursday January 19th marked the 10th Annual Basketball Special Olympics event hosted at Iowa Western Community College in Kanesville Arena.

Program Coordinators Martin Wright and Bruce Wilson both put in a tremendous amount of time and effort to make a great experience for the athletes. “I think it’s great for athletes on every level to come together and support such a great cause.” Bruce Wilson stated.

Treynor High School also gave an awesome effort in participating with the activities. “It is really important that we get the community and local schools involved, I am honored to be a part of a great event. Everyone had a great time!” - Women’s Basketball Sophomore player Alicia Mountain.

Participants were able to compete in awesome skills events ranging from spot shooting, dribbling, and passing drills. All the athletes were rewarded for their more than best efforts; based on the participant’s performance whoever scores the highest gets to compete in the Mid-Winter State Tournament.

Special Olympics’ mission is to transform lives through the empowerment of sports and finding the inner champion in everyone. Special Olympics Iowa provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions in 23 Olympic-type sports, hosting 8 state wide tournaments each year and 68 local area competitions. Iowa Western will continue to participate and help develop new ideas with Special Olympics of Southwest for next year’s 10th annual showdown!
